In the manner of Juan van der Hamen
Portrait of a Spanish Nobleman
Bearing the inscription:
Serafín Carroz de Centelles, el liberal hijo legítimo de Don Luís Centelles y Doña Toda Carroz
Serafín Carroz de Centelles (d. 1557), Conde de Oliva was son of Luís de Centelles, Baron de Centelles and Conde de Quirra and his wife Toda Carroz. He was husband of Joana Hipólita de Ora and father of Joaquín Carroz de Centelles y de Ora, Conde de Centelles, Caballero de Santiago, Conde de Castillo de Centelles (this honour was bestowed by Philip III).
This painting was probably one in a series of corridor portraits which is why it is numbered XIII. Series like this were often painted a long time after their subjects lifetime.
Over the centuries, the family had properties in Catalonia and Valencia and Seraphín was also known in Catalan as “Serafí Carròs de Centelles or Serafí de Centelles Carròs . There is some confusion because the father s surname (de Centelles) sometimes occurs before the mother s (Carroz). This may be because of a title inherited from his mother. Seraphín could possibly have been named after his illustrious relative, Serafín Centelles or de Centelles, second Conde de Oliva (1480-1536) who was a celebrated poet.
